Nine years ago this month, in May 2003, before the internet was maybe even the internet, I started blogging. Originally, it wasn’t what I blog about now. But, it was a blog. I wrote mostly about my life experiences, my observations, my family, my friends, and everything in-between. I would guesstimate that probably in 2005 or 2006 I started writing more about business than life experience, but life experience still made its way, even today, into my blog. My strategy has always been “People want to business with those who are real and they can relate to” – so that … Continue reading →

The poet Robert Frost put a “different” twist on it, long before the expression was coined.
Most of you know that I absolutely LOVE Seinfeld. Often, after a long day, or after returning from a business trip, I find myself watching a quick 20 minute episode on DVR. That said, I don’t know how many of my friends here follow Seinfeld , but those of you who did may recall this image – one of George putting a dollar into a tip jar and then attempting to remove it when the person behind the counter didn’t see (and hence wouldn’t appreciate) his generosity. So much for doing good and having your heart in the right place. … Continue reading →

I invited a contractor to come over a few days ago to revisit a house project. As … Continue reading →

A week ago today, I was honored to speak two sessions at the 2nd Annual Interior Symposium, hosted by PLANET and OFA. Like last year, the event took place at the amazing Longwood Gardens. I’ll get to that in a bit. The event was an overwhelming success! With increased attendance over last year, over 120 Interior Plantscaping professionals gathered to learn cutting edge topics affecting the industry. I was able to share elements of Customer Service, using examples from Starbucks (where I am writing this blog, ironically) and other well known companies – about both good and bad customer service … Continue reading →

OK, I will 100% admit it. I use the word “impactful” – and for years, people have told me that it isn’t a word. I like it. I think it makes a point. I prefer it over the words that online sources say to use, such as “influential” or “effective” (see this link for the reference) ~ that said, I have genuinely tried to stop using the word. It seems that some brainiac would always be telling me that it wasn’t a word. Well, I know you’re right, but I’ve never had anyone say they didn’t understand what I was … Continue reading →

Several weeks ago, I traveled west to Kansas State University. That’s right, I didn’t say the University of Kansas. And, it was awesome! Thirty six times it has happened, and it just keeps on getting better. I’m talking about PLANET’s Student Career Days, hosted this year by Kansas State University in Manhattan, March 22-25. If you’ve never been to Manhattan, it’s certainly worth of trip. Located in the Flint Hills, it’s a beautiful college town about two hours west of Kansas City. It was really such an awesome experience to have attended so many SCD’s over the years, but … Continue reading →
