So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains
And we never even know we have the key.

5 Essential Tools for Road Warriors

I just landed in Chicago for some meetings, and posted this from the comfort of the United Airlines Red Carpet club, so I guess you could say this topic was top of mind.

I may have mentioned that I get to do a fair bit of travelling as part of my job. Speaking engagements, on-site consulting, and Kolbe evaluations have me on the road more often than not, so I’ve had to find some useful tools to ensure I can find the info I need quickly and easily.

Here are a few of the tools I use to help me stay on top of my game

Dropbox – A fantastic tool to keep all of your photos, docs, movies, and music in sync, no matter where you are. Basically it’s another folder on your desktop, which you can access from anywhere with a decent internet connection.  Keep your travel itinerary, presentation files, and contact list in your dropbox, and as long as you can get online, you can access your info.

Basecamp – Online collaboration made easy.  An amazing tool to manage each stage of the project you’re working on, and communicate with all the people working on it.

Skype – An outstanding tool for real communications.  Chat via your laptop or your smartphone, and save yourself big bucks in long distance.  Use the video chat for a more personal experience or the instant message chat if you’d like to have a record of the conversation.

Hootsuite – An excellent web-based tool to stay in touch with all of your social media presences – including LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, myspace, and foursquare.  I’ve included Hootsuite in previous lists – but it’s an essential tool for social road warriors.

Kayak iPhone app – Sometimes, you need to make changes to your travel plans while you’re travelling. This app lets you compare deals on your flights, hotels, and rental cars, and you can even book your hotel in-app.  Perfect for last minute layovers or unscheduled delays.

An Update from Melissa – 2 Likes to Change a Life

Thank you to everyone that has helped me spread the word and help Melissa get an opportunity to change her life.  Your support for my “Sis” means the world to me, and I wanted to share Melissa’s gratitude, too.

Voting closes tomorrow (Friday) at noon – so if you haven’t voted yet, please do so right now.  Instructions are below – 2 clicks, that’s it.

My cousin - Melissa Ward Irwin - is like my sister.  Nothing happens in her life without affecting mine and vice versa.  I never had a sister, but she definitely makes up for it.  We are SO close, and have NO secrets.  She called me last Friday and said she wanted to “win” the lifelong race she’s been having with her weight, so she entered herself into a competition with a local fitness magazine for a weight loss challenge type of deal.  It’s one of those Facebook campaigns that, if she gets more people to “like” her photo, the magazine will pay for her to have six months of intense food/gym/trainer/dietician to teach her how to lose weight and keep it off.  I’m very excited for her, and would be very grateful if you could help her us win.

Please Help me Help Melissa

It’s a super easy process – but one that will mean a lot to me.

Step 1: Click here and “Like” this page

Step 2: Click on this pic of Melissa, and “Like” her photo (if you want to say something positive and encouraging to her – I know she will appreciate it)

Step 3: Go back to your regular Facebook surfing (or tell your friends you just did something supereasy, yet superhelpful.)

Thanks for your help –   I’m grateful to have a loving family, supporting friends, and the support of a powerful network of people like you.

The Deadline is Noon Friday – We Need Your Speed

Please help us spread the word about this – it will make a huge difference to Melissa.  Tweet it/retweet it/post it on your blog, on your Facebook page or on your LinkedIn profile.  Thank you all again for helping my sister win her race!
