Song 17 – Theologians, Wilco

by jason cupp on May 23, 2008

I’ve written many times about how my brother solidified my love for the band Wilco… We even went to their concert last year together with many friends, and were in the FRONT ROW!!

I love the flow, context, rhythm, drive and push of this song… Perhaps my favorite part of the lyrics… (although I like them all): No one’s ever gonna take my life from me I lay it down

Now, I read a lot of differing opinions on the lyrics of this song here but the truth is – the beauty of music is the individual interpretation of the lyrics…

My take: Theologians, for the most part, are pretty arrogant. They express a “holier than thou” attitude towards the Scriptures (not all of them, for sure) – but the truth is, as they often judge people, they rarely know them. They judge them based on their lack of knowledge. Knowledge is rarely transferred from the brain to the heart. Ugh. I believe that my relationship with Christ resides in my heart, and I might not know everything, but I know this – God is alive inside me. I struggle. I get screwed up. I screw up. But, hopefully at the end of the day, I’m real and honest about it. So… there you go. Thanks, bro…

Regardless, it’s a pretty kick-ass song. What do you think about that, Mr. Theologian?

Theologians
They don’t know nothing
About my soul
About my soul

I’m an ocean
An abyss in motion
Slow motion
Slow motion

Inlitterati lumen fidei
God is with us everyday
That illiterate light
Is with us every night

Theologians
That don’t know nothing
About my soul
Oh they don’t know

They thin my heart with little things
And my life with change
Oh in so many ways
I find more missing every day

Theologians

I’m going away
Where you will look for me
Where I’m going you cannot come

No one’s ever gonna take my life from me
I lay it down
A ghost is born
A ghost is born
A ghost is born

I’m an ocean
I’m all emotion
I’m a cherry ghost
Cherry ghost

Hey I’m a cherry ghost
A cherry ghost
