Facebook Chat Scam asking for money…. URGENT

by jason cupp on March 18, 2010

So I recently linked my Facebook Chat to iChat – which has been great since I’m on iChat all the time, but rarely the actual Facebook website – I’ve had some great conversations with my Facebook friends recently that I wouldn’t normally have – even with some of my clients.

This morning, I had a friend of mine – who is from my “extended family” in Wisconsin say hi – of course, it was great to hear from Amy, since I haven’t been to Wisconsin in many years…  It IMMEDIATELY smelled like a scam…  bad grammar, spelling, and no mention of Amy and her husband going to London (and I’m sure my mom would have said something to me about that) on her page…

It went like this (screen shots of the conversation are below)…  They said they were stuck in London, got robbed by a “mugger” and had no money, no phone, but did get to keep their passports (ah huh)…  I said I could call home or give her the phone numbers… I asked who she was with, and the scammer replied that HE was with his WIFE and kids.  Ah huh.  Scam.

Be careful – I’m sure they would have eventually asked me to wire money, and I should have now thought about getting them to say that – but I didn’t.  Argh!
